Triathlon Canada Names 2011 Teck National Team

VICTORIA—A group of six athletes loaded with international experience will represent Canada at elite triathlon races around the world in 2011 as Triathlon Canada officially named its Teck National Team.

Building on season loaded with international story lines for Canada’s senior-level athletes, Triathlon Canada named a stellar line up of two men and four women that will don the maple leaf while competing in World Championship Series and World Cup events next season.

Edmonton’s Paula Findlay, who shocked the world by winning back-to-back World Championship Series titles in 2010 with victories in London, England and Kitzbuhel, Austria will lead a dynamic group of four women who all boast international victories.

Victoria’s Kirsten Sweetland, who captured the silver medal at the Under-23 World Championships in Budapest this September, has recovered from injury that plagued her most of the 2010 season, and is now ready to challenge the top triathletes in the world. Vancouver’s Lauren Campbell (Groves), who missed last year with a injuries, is also ready to head back to the start line. Campbell captured her first World Cup podium in Des Moines, Iowa two years ago. Rounding out the Canadian women’s squad will be Montreal’s Kathy Tremblay The 2008 Olympian has two World Cup podiums to her credit.

Veteran experience with youthful enthusiasm will join forces as Victoria’s Simon Whitfield and Kyle Jones, of Oakville, Ont., have been named to the Canadian men’s team

The Two-time Olympic medallist, Simon Whitfield, will continue his march to the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London in hopes of securing his first World Championship Series medal and third Olympic medal. The three-time Olympian has won nearly everything on the table in the sport including an Olympic gold and silver medal and a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games to go along with 12 World Cup victories and 21 podium finishes.

Whitfield will continue guiding Kyle Jones, who made significant strides against the top triathletes in the world in 2010 where he fought is way to the top of international leaderboards with the world’s elite.

While individual race plans for the 2011 season have developed for each of the national team athletes, triathlon’s World Championship Series kicks off April 9 in Sydney, Australia.

Triathlon Canada will hold a media conference in the spring to officially introduce its 2011 National Team athletes.
